Montana Prevention Certification Board Launches *NEW* Online Certification for Associate Prevention Specialists

Montana – September 16, 2024 – The Montana Prevention Certification Board (MPCB) is excited to announce the launch of its online certification program for Associate Prevention Specialists (APS). This new certification aims to uphold high standards in the substance misuse prevention field and related health sectors, ultimately enhancing intervention strategies and mitigating the impact of issues faced by Montanans.

The APS certification serves as a stepping stone to becoming a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) by creating a pathway for education, skills, and training for those new to the primary prevention field. Certification highlights a commitment to ethical and professional excellence in behavioral health. It recognizes a commitment to the expertise and skills of substance misuse prevention professionals, setting a benchmark for competency in the field.

“MPCB is committed to advancing prevention services throughout Montana,” said Karen Sylvester, Board President. “The APS certification provides a structured pathway for professionals to demonstrate their competency through education, experience, and adherence to a code of ethical conduct. This is the first step in attaining the international IC&RC certification.”

Key Application Requirements:

• Education & Residency: High school diploma or GED required; must reside or work in Montana for at least 51% of the time.
• Experience: 1,000 documented hours in prevention-related work, including SPF Application for Prevention Success Training (SAPST) and Ethics in Prevention.
• Letter of Support: A letter from a supervisor supporting your certification goals if applying within your current job scope.
• Application Statement: A personal statement outlining your motivation for pursuing certification.
• Code of Ethics: Agreement to adhere to the Code of Ethical Conduct.
• Fees: $100 application fee.
• Prevention Performance Domains: Planning & Evaluation, Prevention Education & Service Delivery, Communication, Community Organization, Public Policy & Environmental Change, Professional Growth & Responsibility.

The APS certification supports professionals engaged in teaching, community outreach, and other roles that intersect with primary prevention strategies, even if they do not traditionally identify as prevention specialists. It plays a significant role in tackling substance misuse and mental health issues through evidence-based prevention methods.
